Description
The latest model in the popular series of ‘smart’ RGB LEDs is the WS2813. Its predecessor, the WS2812B, became immensely popular and a beloved mainstay of every maker’s blinky projects thanks to its low driving voltage, high brightness and good color consistency. However, the WS2813 fixes the problem of dead strings of LEDs with a ‘BI’ pin.
Using dual-signal wires the WS2813 offers signal break-points that guarantee a continuous transmission. That is, if an LED in the middle of the chain burns, the circuit remains closed and the other LEDs will still light up. As long as no other adjacent LEDs are broken, the remaining LEDs will continue to work normally.
The SMD package includes 6 pins: Data In, Backup Data In, Data Out, Power for LEDs, Ground, and one Not Connected. In other listings I have breakout boards carrying single or multiple of these tiny, yet ultra-bright LEDs in a wide array of form factors. These include:
- Rings
- Flexible Strips
- Matrices and Arrays
- Rigid Strips
You can use these fantastic LEDs to make a long chain that can be controlled using only 1 pin from your microcontroller and your favorite compatible with NeoPixel library.
To get started, power them using 5VDC and chain the boards together by tying the Data-Out pin of one to the Data-in of the next one in the chain. BIN should be connected to the previous LED’s DIN.
Features:
- 10-pack of WS2813 RGB LEDs
- 6-pin SMD package: NC, VCC (LED Power), GND, Data In, Backup Data In, and Data Out
- Multiple LEDs can be chained by tying Data Out and Data In pins
- Fully addressable LEDs allow for individual control of color and brightness
- 5050 (50mm x 50mm) white SMD package makes it easy to use in your own designs or to replace a damaged LED in your product
- Compatible with Adafruit NeoPixel LEDs
