FAQs
How did I get started?
I loooove building things. And, a few years ago, I started making videos on my YouTube channel about getting started with DIY Electronics. Seeing that the videos were well received, I decided to dedicate more time into it, and expand the type of projects I worked on. Building a site where I could link all the parts I used for the builds was the natural step, so in 2015 I launched this site.
Thanks to the support—moral and financial—of the 'Makers' community, I decided to list the same products on Amazon, which helps me greatly with the fulfillment logistics so I can dedicate my time to creating content with the products for the purpose of education and entertainment, as well as give my customers the technical support needed for their projects.
Is this my "full-time job"?
If I had a nickel... This is a question I get asked. Every. Single. Time. And one that I happily answer with an ear-to-ear smile: yes, OF COURSE! Most of the time those who ask do a good job of hiding their skepticism when they hear my response, but I understand that the non-traditional nature of being a Maker Pro and Content Creator makes it hard to believe how I make "ends meet".
I'm extremely lucky that over the course of 7 years, the DIY Electronics world has grown to the point where independent creators like myself are able to support themselves. I was fortunate to get started at a time of rapid growth in demand, which wasn't met with the level of supply that exists in 2020.
What's a typical workday for you?
One of the best things about being a "solopreneur" is that I get to wear many proverbial hats while running this business. That makes it hard to have one day being similar to the next, something I enjoy very much. There are some recurring aspects with high priority that more or less happen regularly, these are:
- Fulfilling orders (thank you for your support!)
- Restocking inventory, which involves contacting distributors and manufacturers, placing and processing purchased items
- Designing or choosing new products, as well as creating online listings for them
- Creating documentation for existing products, including videos and learning resources
- Working on my YouTube/Twitch channels, including recording and editing project videos
- Providing tech support for customers, although I also answer any questions I get through social media or email
What's next for ACROBOTIC?
As of now (2020), the plan is to keep providing great online content and products for people who are interested in DIY Electronics, programming, and Making in general. When I started the company, the typical business models were based around growing the size of a company, seeking investment, having an exit strategy, etc. I've found that I'm perfectly happy being a "one-person show", particularly with the resources that exist today for outsourcing time-consuming tasks such as inventory tracking, order fulfillment, bookkeeping and accounting, etc. This allows me to dedicate my time to the technical side of the business, which is a model that I wish to maintain for the foreseeable future.
