Details
The Flypanels System is a modular device typically used in Insect Vision research. The system comprises a computer, a controller, and an arena. The arena itself typically consists of two printed-circuit boards and an array of "panels" arranged in a cylindrical configuration. These panels are individually addressable, and comprise an 8x8 LED dot-matrix connected to a 32mm x 32mm printed-circuit board.
During typical operation, users download visual patterns (on/off and grayscale values for each LED) from the computer to the controller, which is done using a flash memory card. Then, the users program the controller to display the pattern on the LEDs according to some parameters (these vary according to the experiment of interest). The controller is able to execute the program is a loop displaying the patterns available in the SD card. For a more detailed explanation, please refer to Reiser & Dickinson, 2007.
