Description
The break-away family of connectors are an absolute necessity in every DIY electronics workspace. They are very useful for connecting PCBs to solderless breadboards, inter-connecting shields and daughterboards, selecting power configurations, and many other tasks essential for making use of the hardware. These 0.1" spaced, gold plated, .05" thick set of male and female connectors are perfectly suitable for any of them.
This product listing is for a 0.1" spaced, 8 position, male, through-hole, right-angled connector, which is gold plated to prevent oxidation of the pins.
Naming convention
One thing these useful connectors don't have is a consistent naming scheme. Here are a few pointers for reference purposes:
- The term 'positions' is used interchangeably with 'pins' (i.e., number of positions refers to the number of pins on the connector)
- Typically we refer to male connectors as headers, and we call the female ones sockets
- The type (or class) of connector is ususally denominated board-to-board
- The term 'break-away' (or 'breakaway') is used because of how easy it is to tear apart these connectors, and get one (or more) connector(s) with fewer pins. This term is typically restricted to the male version of the connector
- In our case, we use the term "Break-away Pin Connector" as a synecdoche for the type, and specify the gender and orientation in parenthesis (e.g., Break-away Pin Connector, 0.1" Pitch, 8-Pin, (Female, Right-Angle))
