Want to easily and accurately keep track of seconds, minutes, hours, week, date, month and year information? Then the DS3231 Real-Time Clock RTC (datasheet) is for you! The DS3231 is a low-cost, high-precision I2C RTC with integrated crystal oscillator (TCXO) and crystal. The device includes a battery input that maintains accurate timing when the main power is turned off. The integrated crystal improves the long-term accuracy of the device and reduces the number of components in the production line.

The DS3231 comes in a beefy package because its crystal—needed for tracking time—is located inside the chip! Moreover, a temperature sensor is also in the package to compensate for the temperature-dependent frequency changes by adding/removing clock ticks for increased timekeeping accuracy.

This breakout board makes it easy to connect this RTC to your microcontroller board or single-board computer such as Arduino, ESP8266, BeagleBone or Raspberry Pi! The four pins correspond to power (VCC, GND) and I2C communication (SDA, SCL). We've included in our design pull-up resistors on the I2C lines as customary. With a coin cell (CR2032-sized, not included) plugged into the adapter on the back of the board, you can get years of precision timekeeping, even when main power is lost. This makes it a perfect solution for datalogging, clocks, or any application where time tracking is of the essence.
