Through a collaboration with Fab Lab Barcelona, we've put together our first Kickstarter campaign. The awesome folks from Kickstarter have reviewed and approved our proposed project, so the campaign is now live and kicking! Our goal is to raise at least $50,000 to continue the full-scale production of the hardware for the Smart Citizen project, as well as further develop the online, data-visualization platform, and finish the enclosure and mobile app.
The idea behind the Smart Citizen project is to answer all questions regarding the environment from a more personal perspective. Thanks to this project, you'll be able to measure, visualize, and share with other citizens, what the environment looks like in your own backyard! Let's be honest here, plenty of other sites offer a heap of data about environmental conditions a global scale (for example, the World Bank). The Smart Citizen project, however, will allow you to answer questions like:
This level of granularity in the data is the motivation for the Smart Citizen project. As a citizen-led effort, we can collect our individual contributions in order to build a global network of environmental information. Once the data start becoming available, the impact of such a network is immense. Imagine, with a few clicks you could check the average light and noise levels, air quality, temperature and humidity, number of wireless networks (and more to come) at a street/block/neighborhood scale!
